Attachment Styles, and Why Some People Are Childfree

Our first article “Attachment Orientations Predict the Likelihood of Choosing to be Childfree and the Reasons for Not Wanting Children” has recently been published in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin!

This study looked at why some people choose to be childfree. We wanted to know not just what reasons people have, but also how common thosereasons are in the childfree community. Most childfree people said that they didn’twant to have kids because they wanted to keep their freedom and because havingkids just isn’t compatible with their lifestyle or goals. Many childfree people also said that they were worried about the current state of the world and the environment, that they preferred to focus on their careers, didn’t want to risk losing their personal identities, that they have mental health and financial concerns related to having kids, and that they just don’t like kids that much.

We also wanted to explore the relationship between attachment styles and why people are childfree. Generally, people who are more anxious in their relationships were more likely to be childfree because ofworries and fears, like the environment or the impact of having kids on their mental health. People who are more avoidant in their relationships were more likely to be childfree for lifestyle related reasons, like wanting to keeptheir personal freedom.
